On the Roads of Oaxaca

The largest artificial lake in Latin America offers an unexpected sight in an otherwise arid region

Oaxaca's geography is a refreshing mix of tropical vegetation and arid plateau, with the traveler seamlessly crossing barren canyons, valley panorama and vivid shorelines.


The northern part of the state is the most contrasted, with most of its villages nested into the huge massif of Zempoaltepetl.


The central valley of Oaxaca, around the capital city, has the highest density of population, with most of its farms and villages within 50 miles of Oaxaca City. It was the center of the Zapotec kingdom for 3,000 years, and is still the repository of traditional Oaxacan culture and handicrafts like the famous Rugs of Teotitlán.

Going southeast, the hills give way to the valley of the Rio Tehuantepec, with their tradition-rich small cities. This valley is also the gateway to the coastal plain, stretching along the pacific from the virgin beaches of Huatulco to the crushing waves of Puerto Escondido.
