Playa La Ropa, "the clothes beach," is a mile-long crescent of yellow-white sand where most of the high-end hotels of the city are located, and a favorite vacation destination for wealthy residents of Mexico City.
This strand got its name when a 16th-century Chinese galleon full of fine silks was scuttled by the pirates who once called Zihuatanejo home.
The beach is lined with restaurants and classy hotels such as Villa del Sol, which has a reputation as one of the world's most enchanting getaways. There's not much snorkeling to do, but plenty of beautiful, white sand that seems to stretch forever. There is also just enough of a surf to make playing in the water fun but not dangerous. Parasailing, jetskiing and banana tubing are also available watersports.
Playa Madera is a small beach north of La Ropa, lined with bungalows, hotels and guesthouses. From there, climb to Paseo Costera for the best viewpoint of Zihuatanejo bay.
