Ixtapa Island

Ixtapa must-see Ecotourism jewel (source)
No visit to Ixtapa is complete without a trip to Isla Ixtapa, also known as Isla Grande.

The pristine offshore islet is a wildlife preserve featuring several crescent cove beaches, fleshy green orchids, multi-colored fishes in underwater gardens, and shady native acacias. And to sustain this ecological paradise, the whole island is cleaned every evening.

Most non-motorized watersport equipments can be rented at Isla Ixtapa.

Boats going to the Island leave either from Zihuatanejo downtown pier, or from Playa Quieta, an aptly named strand on 5 minute away.

Visitors usually arrive at the only beach on the island with much construction on it, called Cuachalalate after a type of medicinal tree that only grows here. Sunbathers often spend the whole day picnicking on its remarkably soft sand. Many visitors stay all day at one of its dozen seafood restaurant Palapas.

For a change of scenery, cross to the western, more private beach Playas Varadero, a favorite place for skin diving and wildlife watching. This narrow and tree-shaded strand has incredibly clear water, with a long offshore coral reef that is a magnet for all ecotourists. Most tours purchased from a travel agent or tour operator will arrive at this beach in the island.

A short walk over the sand from Playa Varadero (about 50 meters) leads to Playa Coral, usually the most tranquil beach. This is the snorkelers' favorite, thanks to its shallow coral reefs surrounding the beach, barring access to motorboats.

A lone palapa marks the path to the only undeveloped beach on the island, Playa Carey, also called Playa Sacrificio.
