The Zocalo of Taxco

The social center of the city (source)
The town of 90,000 people, which clings precariously to the side of a steep mountain, is centered on the Zócalo, Plaza Borda, whose dominating baroque church can be seen from every corner of the city.

This charming town square is the focal point of Taxco’s social scene, and is surrounded by white stucco buildings, whose red-tile are a trademark of the city. In the Zócalo, most of the buildings have floor-level silver shops that also host top-floor restaurants with balconies overlooking the scene. The Zócalo is quite busy throughout the day, so shoppers gleefully retreat to the upper floors for lunch or simply to sip a relaxing Mexican lemon-grass tea and study the complex carvings of the church’s façade.

Besides the silver shops and the restaurants, the plaza is also home to the former Borda family town Casa Borda, built at the same time as the church, also in baroque style. The house now serves as the Taxco Casa de Cultura, featuring exhibitions by local artists.
