Marketplaces of Taxco

Marketplaces in Taxco are very colorful (source)
Walking downhill from the Zócalo leads to Taxco main market, a mind-boggling bazaar of awning-covered stalls meandering deep inside the mountain. Mirroring the layout of the city, this marketplace is a narrow, alley-like maze winding down the hillside from the Plaza Borda.

In addition to a collection of wholesale silver shops, you'll find numerous food stands, often the best places for a cheap traditional meal. Sunday is generally market day and vendors from surrounding villages and towns come to the city to hawk their wares.

Taxco also hosts a busy silver Tianguis, or market day, every Saturday starting at 10 a.m., that takes place along the main street through town and has dozens of stalls selling silver items of every variety and at bargain prices.

In addition to artisans of silver, Taxco is home to some of Mexico's finest stone sculptors. Many indigenous-style ceremonial masks are also for sale in the marketplace, but few are real "antiques" - even if some merchants would like you to believe otherwise. Arnoldo’s, at Palma 1, carries a selection of ceremonial masks with authenticity certificates and written descriptions of their use.
