There are many good family-run restaurants on and near the Zócalo. The Santa Fe, on a side street leading from the Zócalo, is a local favorite serving good, cheap Mexican lunches and nine varieties of pizza. Several other Pizzerias nearby cater to busy silver merchants and traders, like the Bora Bora Pizza, overlooking the Zócalo, Tel. ++52 (762) 622 1721, 1 pm-midnight daily ($4 - $20).
Consider also the many taquerías scattered throughout town. They serve good, traditional Mexican dishes for a few pesos. Countless of them are in the market, looking like food stands and stalls.
Most of the largest hotels have restaurants with comfortable premises but expensive and sub-standard food.
The well-advertised Paco's, on a balcony overlooking bustling Zócalo, has a limited selection of mostly American type and unimaginative dishes at relatively high prices. The place is better visited for a drink later at night, for cocktails, conversation, and people-watching, all of which continue until midnight daily.
Another classic, somewhat over-priced full-service restaurant on the Zócalo is El Mural, offering both international and Mexican dishes, with a view of the Santa Prisca church and some beautiful Juan O’Gorman painting.
For a romantic evening, consider La Ventana de Taxco. It is always an oddity to come to Mexico and eat Italian, but the view from its dining area if truly spectacular.
In the Hacienda del Solar hotel, Paraje del Solar. Tel. ++52 (762) 622-0323. $15-$30. Daily 8-11:00pm.
A different kind of place is Berta’s, by the Santa Prisca Church. Opened the 30s by Sra. Berta, who made her fame on a drink of the same name (tequila, soda, lime, and honey), it’s the traditional gathering place of the local gentry and more than a few tourists. Spurs and old swords decorate the walls, and a saddle is casually slung over the banister on the stairs leading to the second-floor room, where tin masks leer from the walls. Open daily from 11am to around 10pm.
