By Bus:
Taxco is served by two major bus lines, both with connection from Mexico City's southern bus terminal (2 hours, $10) and from Acapulco (4 hours, $20):
- Estrella de Oro has bus from and to Taxco throughout the day. Their hacienda-looking terminal is located on the old highway 95, 10 min south of the Zócalo by foot. Tel. ++52 (762) 622 0131. www.estrelladeoro.com.mx (in Spanish).
- Estrella Blanca also operates First-call and luxury buses. Tel. ++52 (762) 622 2064. Also has a line going straight to the northern pacific coast of Mexico.
A host of lines connect virtually every town and most villages around Taxco. If possible, take one of the luxury express coaches that speed between major towns. All these buses have plush reclining seats air-conditioning, on-board toilet and video. First-class cost slightly less, and are often as comfortable, but can be much slower as the driver may stop en-route to take or drop off passengers. These buses are safe and usually well maintained.
You can either reserve by phone, or buy it directly at the station. Luxury and first-class lines are rarely sold out. If possible, request a reserved seat number in the front of the bus (seats numbered 1 to 30 in most buses). The rear seats are occupied by smokers and nosier passengers.
By Car
From Mexico City, take Paseo de la Reforma to Chapultepec Park and merge with the Periférico, which will take you to Highway 95D on the south end of town. From the Periférico, take the Insurgentes exit and merge until you come to the sign for Cuernavaca/Tlalpan. Choose either CUERNAVACA CUOTA (faster but with toll) or CUERNAVACA LIBRE (much slower but free). Continue south around Cuernavaca to the Amacuzac interchange, and proceed straight ahead for Taxco. The drive from Mexico City takes about 31⁄2 hours.
From Acapulco you have two options: Highway 95D is the toll road through Iguala to Taxco, or you can take the old two-lane road (95) that winds more slowly through villages; it’s in good condition.
By Plane
Mexico City international airport is the closest. You may also land at Acapulco or even Zihuatanejo.
